Bio-Med Science Academy Accepts Class of 2017

Bio-Med Science Academy, a high school launched in August 2012 on the campus of Northeast Ohio Medical University, announces the acceptance of 119 students into the Class of 2017.

The Academy began classes on Aug. 20, 2012, with a charter cohort of ninth grade students. This new class constitutes the second crop of students to be admitted to the Academy.

The new students hail from Columbiana, Mahoning, Portage, Stark, and Summit Counties, representing 20 different school districts. Portage County alone is represented by over 80 students from 10 of the county’s 11 school districts.  The Academy is now building a wait list for students who remain interested. If accepted students decide not to enroll prior to the first day of class, students from the wait list will be considered.

“I couldn’t be more excited about the interest in this second class of students as well as the academic quality of the students who will make up the Class of 2017,” said Stephanie Lammlein, Director of the Academy. “I look forward to continuing along the trail blazed by our inaugural class this year.  We continue to appreciate the support of the community, the local schools, and the families of our incoming students who have been so supportive of this endeavor.”

The Academy is a STEM+M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine) community high school, one of the first rural STEM schools in the country, and the first STEM focused high school to be located on the campus of an academic health center. Academy integration on a medical university campus allows teachers and students to take advantage of sophisticated research laboratories and guest lectures from an array of scientific researchers, professors and medical professionals. The Academy also engages professionals from engineering, science, pharmaceutical, biomedical, and other companies to provide lectures and serve as project advisors.
