About Us

  /  About Us

Bio-Med is a Public, Independent, STEM School.

Just what does that mean?

Bio-Med Science Academy opened in Rootstown, Ohio in August 2012. Our inaugural class of 69 ninth graders came from 27 different school districts across Mahoning, Stark, Summit, Trumbull and Portage counties.

Bio-Med is a Public School.

We are not a Charter School or Magnet School for high-ability science students. In fact, we are open to students of all abilities and interests, and students of all socio-economic backgrounds. There is no entrance exam. Students are selected for admission through a blind lottery of all applicants. Bio-Med students from the previous year are automatically enrolled for the next year, if they choose to remain.

There is no tuition to attend. We do have fees for consumables and other items associated with specific courses and instruction.

Bio-Med is an Independent School.

We are held to Ohio’s  standards for education. Our students are meeting the same standards required and tested by the State of Ohio. In many subject areas, our graduation requirements are actually more than those required by the state. It’s just that we take a different route to get there. We follow our own roadmap.

Bio-Med is a STEM school.

Many people know that STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, and they assume Bio-Med is a school totally focused on things like 1s and 0s and scientific notation. At Bio-Med, STEM is not a specific body of knowledge. Rather, it’s a process that can be applied to any subject, any problem, anything the real world throws at you.

A STEM approach involves a different kind of rigor. We help our students push themselves to achieve mastery in a subject. Their critical thinking, problem-solving, innovation and collaboration skills are sharpened and honed. When they leave Bio-Med they feel comfortable and prepared for whatever their next step is.
