Student Attributes & Bio-Med Science Academy Pillars

The Bio-Med curriculum seeks to produce not just future mathematicians, engineers, doctors and scientists… but leaders in all fields. In doing so, we foster and nourish these attributes in our students… attributes for success in the 21st century.

Student Attributes (2)

Bio-Med Science Academy Pillars

We have defined our approach to education by these pillars. As our curriculum and teaching methods continually evolve, we closely examine every change to be sure it aligns with our pillars of excellence.

Our pillars are what makes us… us.

Research & Development School

The administrative staff and faculty (and students) are engaged in a constant “feedback-loop” to evaluate what we do, how we do it, and pursue a path of continuous improvement. We don’t do things “because that’s how it’s always been done.” We don’t hesitate to make changes in the middle of the school year, if we determine there’s a better way. This fairly constant state of change can be unexpected and uncomfortable for parents. But it’s also exciting. Because our students are actively involved in and contributing to the process, they enjoy the challenge of change. And we believe they will be better equipped to handle the changes life will throw at them. The point is, as a true Research & Development School, we are in the process of creating a new vision of education in the U.S.

Curriculum Integration

Rather than a structured math block followed by an English block followed by a science block, students engage multiple disciplines at the same time in and out of class.

21st Century Skills

We have asked leaders of colleges and universities, businesses, science and medical centers what skills they are looking for in their emerging workforce. Those skills make up our Student Attributes (above). Our students will leave Bio-Med with those skills engaged.

Mastery-based Grading

We define each student’s growth and success by their mastery of a given concept or topic. We do not use letter grades, point scales or percentages. As such, success can look somewhat different for each student. But, all students will be successful in mastering their content.

Restorative Practices

Whether it’s world or national events, or just the growing pains of youth, things can happen to upset the focus of a class or the balance of the community. Bio-Med uses a variety of methods, within a framework of conversation, to engage students and staff in honest and open communications. Students feel invested in their school and are active participants in helping to restore our sense of community.
